Abstract

One of the factors contributing to the growth of innovation is research and development (R&D), a systematic creative work undertaken to increase knowledge of man, culture and society, and the use of this knowledge to devise new applications. It involves three types of research: basic research, applied research (including industrial) and experimental development. For effective implementation of the innovation, market research needs to function efficiently. Market research consists of four areas: supply side, demand side policy transmission mechanism and regulation of the market. The purpose of this article is to evaluate the area for encouraging the emergence of innovation in the business environment with special reference to the position of Malopolska. The article presents the results of the analysis of R&D in the Malopolska province in terms of number of units, investment, employment, higher education and the number of reported inventions and utility models. The paper presents a model pattern of market research and business institutions in relation to examples in Malopolska. The results of the performed analysis show that Malopolska has scored relatively better compared to the remainder of the country. Though, the Malopolska region has scored relatively high, the highest values were achieved by Mazowsze. Despite these high values, these results were weak in correlation to other European countries. The conclusion drawn show that there is room for improvement in state affairs.
